# Mac setup for data analysts and data scientists

A Mac handles most data work well: Python, R, SQL, notebooks and spreadsheets all run natively on Apple silicon. The two things to check before you commit are your BI tool (Power BI Desktop is Windows-only) and your Excel workbooks (Mac Excel lacks Power Pivot and some add-ins). Then set up a layout that keeps the notebook, the data and the docs visible together.

## 1. The basics

1. Install Apple's command-line tools: `xcode-select --install`.
2. Install [Homebrew](https://brew.sh/), the package manager for everything below.
3. Pick an editor: VS Code (`brew install --cask visual-studio-code`) with the Python and Jupyter extensions, or a JetBrains IDE such as PyCharm or DataSpell.

## 2. Python, the low-friction way

Avoid the system Python and Homebrew's Python for project work. Use a tool that manages versions and environments per project:

- **[uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/)**: `brew install uv`, then `uv init`, `uv add pandas polars jupyter`. Fast, and it handles Python versions too.
- **Conda or Miniforge** if your team shares conda environments.

Run notebooks in VS Code, or start JupyterLab with `uv run jupyter lab`.

## 3. R

Install R from CRAN (there's an Apple silicon build) and RStudio Desktop, or use R in VS Code or Positron.

## 4. SQL and local data

- **DuckDB** (`brew install duckdb`): query CSV, Parquet and JSON files directly with SQL. It's often the fastest way to explore a large file on a laptop.
- **DBeaver Community** (free): a GUI client for Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery and most other databases.
- **Postgres.app** or `brew install postgresql` for a local database.

## 5. Spreadsheets and BI

| Tool | On macOS? |
| --- | --- |
| Excel | Yes, but Mac Excel lacks some Windows features: Power Pivot isn't available, and some add-ins are Windows-only. Check what your workbooks use. |
| Google Sheets | Yes, in the browser |
| Tableau Desktop | Yes, with a native Mac version |
| Power BI Desktop | No. Windows only. Use the Power BI web service, or Windows in a virtual machine. |
| Looker Studio, Metabase, Hex, Mode | Yes, in the browser |

If your job lives in Power BI Desktop, plan for a Windows VM (Parallels Desktop runs Windows 11 on Apple silicon) or a Windows machine.

## 6. Memory

Data work is the case where RAM matters. pandas loads data into memory; a 5 GB CSV can need several times that while you work on it. Polars and DuckDB are much more frugal. If you're choosing a Mac for this, more unified memory buys you more than a faster chip.

## 7. Window layout

A typical analysis has four windows in play: the notebook or editor, a data viewer or SQL client, documentation or a ticket, and a chart or dashboard in the browser. Plus chat.

- **On an external monitor**, put the notebook in the largest space and docs beside it; macOS 15's tiling (<kbd>Fn</kbd><kbd>⌃</kbd> plus an arrow) handles two-up layouts.
- **On a MacBook**, four windows don't fit side by side. Overlapping them means constant <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>Tab</kbd>.

A scrolling window manager suits this well. In [Ribbon](https://ribbonformac.com/), every window is a column on a strip wider than the screen: keep the notebook wide in the middle, the SQL client and docs as narrower columns either side, and the browser further along. <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>←</kbd> / <kbd>→</kbd> or a swipe moves between them, and nothing gets squeezed when the chart window opens. Each display gets its own strip if you add a monitor. [Try the strip in the live demo](https://ribbonformac.com/#demo); Ribbon is [$9.99 once](https://ribbonformac.com/#pricing).

## A starting Brewfile

```
brew "uv"
brew "duckdb"
brew "git"
cask "visual-studio-code"
cask "dbeaver-community"
cask "rstudio"
```

Save as `Brewfile` and run `brew bundle`.

## FAQ

### Is a Mac good for data analysis?

Yes for Python, R, SQL, notebooks and most browser-based BI. Check your BI tool first: Power BI Desktop doesn't run on macOS.

### Can I run Power BI on a Mac?

Not Power BI Desktop. Use the Power BI web service, or run Windows 11 in Parallels Desktop on Apple silicon.

### How much RAM does a Mac need for data science?

It depends on data size. pandas needs several times a dataset's size in memory; 16 GB is a workable minimum, and more helps if you work with large files locally.
