An M4 Mac mini drives up to three external displays (two over Thunderbolt and one over Thunderbolt or HDMI, depending on resolution), and the M4 Pro model up to three at higher resolutions. Since it has no screen, keyboard or trackpad of its own, the setup decisions are all about what you plug in, and a trackpad is worth having if you like gestures.

## Monitors and ports

- **Thunderbolt ports (back):** use these for your main monitors. USB-C and Thunderbolt monitors connect with one cable; DisplayPort monitors need a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.
- **HDMI (back):** fine for a third monitor or a TV.
- **Front USB-C ports:** for drives and accessories. They don't carry video.

Apple's Tech Specs page for the Mac mini lists the exact display combinations under **Display Support**; higher resolutions and refresh rates reduce how many you can use at once.

For monitor choice, see [best monitor resolution for a Mac](https://ribbonformac.com/best-monitor-resolution-for-mac). A 27-inch 5K or 4K screen is the usual main display; a second screen in portrait suits code, documents and chat (see [vertical monitor on a Mac](https://ribbonformac.com/vertical-monitor-mac)).

## Keyboard and pointer

- **Any USB or Bluetooth keyboard works.** On a Windows keyboard, swap Option and Command in System Settings → Keyboard → **Keyboard Shortcuts** → **Modifier Keys** so they sit where Mac users expect.
- **Touch ID** needs Apple's Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. Otherwise you'll type your password or use an Apple Watch to unlock.
- **Mouse or trackpad?** A mouse is fine, but macOS's multitasking gestures (Mission Control, switching desktops, App Exposé) need a trackpad. A Magic Trackpad next to the keyboard gives you all of them. See [trackpad gestures for multitasking](https://ribbonformac.com/mac-trackpad-gestures-multitasking).

## Settings to change on day one

- **Arrange your displays:** System Settings → Displays → **Arrange**, so the pointer crosses where you expect. Drag the white menu bar to your main screen.
- **Sleep:** desktop Macs default to sleeping the display after a while; adjust in System Settings → Lock Screen and Energy.
- **Hot corners** (System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Hot Corners) are handy with a mouse, standing in for trackpad gestures.
- **Stage Manager off** if you'll use tiling or a window manager.

## Layout on big screens

A Mac mini usually sits behind one or more large monitors, which changes the window question. A 27-inch screen fits two or three windows side by side; a 34-inch ultrawide fits three or four.

- **macOS 15 tiling** (<kbd>Fn</kbd><kbd>⌃</kbd> plus an arrow) handles halves and quarters on each screen. See [how to tile windows on a Mac](https://ribbonformac.com/how-to-tile-windows-on-mac).
- **Thirds** need Rectangle, Raycast or a window manager. They suit wide screens best.
- **Many windows:** past three or four, something gets covered, or every window shrinks.

[Ribbon](https://ribbonformac.com/), a scrolling window manager, gives each monitor its own strip of columns. You pick a width per window, a third or a half for example, and new windows add columns rather than shrinking the ones on screen. With a Magic Trackpad, a three-finger swipe moves the strip with your fingers; with a mouse, hold Option and scroll sideways, or use the keyboard (<kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>←</kbd> / <kbd>→</kbd>). <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>N</kbd> sends a window to the next monitor. [Try the strip in the live demo](https://ribbonformac.com/#demo); Ribbon is [$9.99 once](https://ribbonformac.com/#pricing) for Apple silicon Macs, including every M4 Mac mini.

## FAQ

### How many monitors can a Mac mini M4 support?

Up to three external displays, depending on their resolutions. Apple's Tech Specs page lists the combinations.

### Do I need a Magic Trackpad with a Mac mini?

No, but macOS's multitasking gestures need a trackpad. With a mouse, use keyboard shortcuts and hot corners instead.

### Can I use a Windows keyboard with a Mac mini?

Yes. Swap Option and Command under Keyboard Shortcuts → Modifier Keys so the keys match the Mac layout.
