# Switching from KDE Plasma to a Mac

KDE users usually miss configurability most, because macOS has a fraction of Plasma's settings. The everyday pieces map well: KRunner becomes Spotlight or Raycast, virtual desktops become Spaces, Overview becomes Mission Control. KWin's tiling, window rules and scripts are where you'll need third-party apps.

## Plasma, mapped to macOS

| KDE Plasma | macOS |
| --- | --- |
| KRunner (<kbd>Alt</kbd><kbd>Space</kbd>) | Spotlight (<kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>Space</kbd>), or [Raycast](https://www.raycast.com/) for plugins and scripts |
| Overview | Mission Control (<kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>↑</kbd>) |
| Virtual desktops (grid of rows and columns) | Spaces (one row per display) |
| Task Manager panel | Dock |
| System Tray | Menu bar extras and Control Center |
| Dolphin | Finder (no split view; open two windows) |
| Konsole | Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty, kitty or WezTerm |
| Spectacle | <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>5</kbd> |
| Klipper clipboard history | Spotlight's clipboard history (macOS 26 Tahoe), or Raycast |
| KDE Connect | iPhone: Continuity; Android: KDE Connect has a macOS build |
| Activities | No equivalent; Focus modes and separate Spaces come closest |

## Virtual desktops

Plasma lets you lay desktops out in a grid and switch in two dimensions. macOS Spaces are a single row per display, switched with <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>←</kbd> / <kbd>→</kbd> or a sideways swipe. Turn on **Switch to Desktop 1**, 2, 3… under System Settings → Keyboard → **Keyboard Shortcuts** → **Mission Control** for <kbd>⌃</kbd> plus a number, and turn off **Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use** (Desktop & Dock) so the row stays in order. More in [multiple desktops on a Mac](https://ribbonformac.com/mac-virtual-desktops-spaces).

## KWin tiling and window rules

- **Quick tiling** (<kbd>Meta</kbd> plus arrows) has a counterpart in macOS 15 and later: <kbd>Fn</kbd><kbd>⌃</kbd> plus arrows for halves, and dragging to edges and corners.
- **Custom tile layouts** (Plasma 6's <kbd>Meta</kbd><kbd>T</kbd> editor) have no built-in equivalent; apps with custom snap areas come closest.
- **Window rules** (force a size, position, desktop or "keep above") mostly aren't possible on macOS. You can pin an app to a desktop from its Dock icon (**Options → Assign To**). Window managers add rules such as "always float this app".
- **Keep above** has no system-wide switch; see [keep a window on top](https://ribbonformac.com/keep-window-on-top-mac).

## KWin scripts: Karousel and friends

If you ran Karousel, the KWin script that gives Plasma a scrolling layout like niri or PaperWM, you'll want a scrolling window manager on the Mac. [Ribbon](https://ribbonformac.com/) gives you the same model: windows in columns on a strip wider than the screen, the strip moving with a trackpad swipe, keyboard focus and move on <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>⌥</kbd> plus <kbd>H</kbd>/<kbd>J</kbd>/<kbd>K</kbd>/<kbd>L</kbd> or the arrows, columns that can hold a stack of windows or tabs, and a per-app float list. Unlike Karousel, it has one strip per display. It's configured in a settings window, so there's no script to maintain.

Free alternatives exist: Paneru (the open-source engine Ribbon builds on, configured with a TOML file) and PaperWM.spoon (Lua, in Hammerspoon). The [best scrolling window managers guide](https://ribbonformac.com/best-scrolling-window-managers-for-mac) compares them.

[Try Ribbon's strip in the live demo](https://ribbonformac.com/#demo); it's [$9.99 once](https://ribbonformac.com/#pricing).

## What you'll give up

- **Deep theming.** macOS has light, dark, an accent colour and a few appearance options. That's about it.
- **Per-window decoration control.** Title bars are drawn by each app.
- **Multiple clipboards and selection paste.** Copy and paste are explicit.

## What you might like

- **Consistent shortcuts.** <kbd>⌘</kbd> means the same thing in every app, and the Emacs text keys (<kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>A</kbd>, <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>E</kbd>, <kbd>⌃</kbd><kbd>K</kbd>) work in every text field.
- **Trackpad gestures**, which are hard to beat. See [trackpad gestures for multitasking](https://ribbonformac.com/mac-trackpad-gestures-multitasking).

## FAQ

### What's the KRunner equivalent on a Mac?

Spotlight (<kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>Space</kbd>). For plugins, scripts and clipboard history on older macOS versions, Raycast.

### Can I lay out Mac desktops in a grid like Plasma?

No. Spaces form a single row per display.

### Is there a Karousel equivalent for Mac?

Yes: scrolling window managers. Ribbon is paid with a settings window; Paneru and PaperWM.spoon are free and configured in files.
